About The Boole Syndicate
The Boole Investment Syndicate has been investing in high growth startups since 2012 and has to date invested over €12m of pure angel investments into those companies, which has typically leveraged 5x investment from other private investment sources and government funds. Operated out of the National Software Center in Mahon, Cork, the Boole Investment Syndicate has over 50 members with approximately 30 members actively investing at any one time.
The founding members of the Boole Syndicate were predominantly from information technology background and tended to invest initially in ICT startups. As the syndicate matured and developed, the scope of investees widened into Food, Medical Devices and Life Sciences, often co-investing with other Irish syndicates such as Irrus Investments in Limerick and the Medtech Syndicate in Galway.

Origins of the name: The Boole Syndicate takes its name from George Boole, a largely self-taught English mathematician, philosopher, and logician, most of whose short career was spent as the first professor of mathematics at University College Cork in Ireland.
Boole’s most notable achievement was the development of Boolean algebra, a system of mathematical logic that laid the foundation for modern digital computer systems and information processing. His work in Boolean algebra provided a formal method for expressing and manipulating logical statements using variables, logical operators (such as AND, OR, and NOT), and truth values (true or false).
Boole’s ideas were groundbreaking because they allowed complex logical operations to be represented and computed using simple algebraic equations. His work influenced various fields, including mathematics, philosophy, computer science, and electrical engineering.
Boole’s book “The Laws of Thought,” published in 1854, presented his logical system and had a profound impact on subsequent developments in logic. It introduced concepts such as Boolean logic gates and Boolean algebra, which are fundamental to modern digital electronics and computer science.
George Boole’s work laid the groundwork for the development of computer programming languages and the design of electronic circuits used in modern computers. His contributions revolutionized the understanding of logic and its application to technology, making him one of the pioneers in the field of computational logic.
How It Works
Company Screening
The Boole Syndicate has a long standing and trusted relationship with AxisBIC, who have provided operational support to the Boole Syndicate since its formation. AxisBIC screen the companies on behalf of the syndicate and in conjunction with the syndicate decide on the companies who pitch to the syndicate
Syndicate Meetings
Syndicate meetings are held bi-monthly with most members deciding to attend in person. Members who cannot make the meeting in person can join virtually. Typically, 3 to 4 companies pitch to the Boole Syndicate at each session. Pitches are 10 minutes long and followed by 10 minutes of Q&A with the founders.
Follow on & Due Diligence
When the founders leaves the meeting, the syndicate discusses the proposition and each member decides individually of they are interested in a follow up discussion with the company and indicate how much they would likely invest. A Deal Lead is chosen from the syndicate to liaise with the company on behalf of the syndicate. A follow up session is typically 1 to 2 hours of a deed dive into the various areas of the proposition that the syndicate members would like to understand better. If this follow on discussion goes well, the syndicate will move towards formal Due Diligence with the company.
Investment
If the syndicate decides to invest, the investment is typically by way of a Boole Syndicate Agreement and using the Boole Nominee structure, which enables multiple investors to invest as one entity into the investee company. Occasionally, investees will set up other structures for investment which are considered on a case-by-case basis
